The seven editions of the Survey “Corridoi ed efficienza logistica dei territori” carried out by Contship and SRM show that while there is an established base of manufacturing companies using intermodal transport (and the figure is higher if we consider the responses of logistics operators), there is considerable potential for improvement if targeted investments are put in place in the port-rail infrastructure and technology upgrades.
The economic factor, cited as one of the main reasons for using only lorries rather than rail or a mix ofthe two, can be better managed once the technological and connection investments have been made.
Moreover, intermodality is among the European sustainability goals, and for a substantial number of the companies surveyed, it appears to be a valuable method of supporting the achievement ofthe decarbonization targets set within the EU: 66% of companies gave a positive response (for 29% significantly and for 37% only slightly). In conclusion, the survey shows that intermodality can be an important tool for industrial and logistics competitiveness and sustainability, making it a worthwhile investment.
